Kindle Helps

There are so many free Kindle books & apps if you know how to find them.

Every day there's a free app in the App Store.  Occasionally on the top of the screen by the free app are apps on sale.  To find free apps, just use the search bar & add the word free to whatever you are looking for.

Here's a link for free apps from Amazon.

To find free Kindle books, use the search bar & add free to the description.  You'll be amazed at all of the free books out there.

Here's a link for free Kids books. Just make sure you check the price before you buy because sometimes the price changes or one that isn't free will show up.  You can narrow down the choices on the side.

Bible Resources for Kids

Deut 6:4-9 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Proverbs 22:6 – Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Getting Organized

Looking for a way to get organized?  I highly recommend these folders I got at Staples.  They are Pendaflex Divide It Up.  Just an idea that has worked for me.

I learned about using folders from my friend Janis in January.  I found these folders at Staples that have multiple tabs & they have really helped with the paper on my counters.  I know where everything is & it's organized.

My folders & tabs
School - OES & Preschool
Church - AWANA, WOW
Stores - Coupons, Gift Certificates, paper clip gift cards to the first tab
Restaurants - Gift Cards, Coupons, Gift Certificates
Receipts - Rebates, FSA
Coupons - Photo, Travel (attach my membership cards)
Follow-ups - Current things I'm working on

I also have used them in my fireproof safe with important documents.  I have our wills, living wills, etc labeled.

1 Month Free Trial of Netflix - tv & movie streaming

Free 1 month Trial of Netflix.

I haven't had cable in over 12 years.  For my Christmas present from my in-laws I got a Blu-Ray player with wifi.  I first tried a Roku from a friend.  For the price difference I thought it made sense to get the dvd player for only $20 more.  At the time, we didn't have a Wii.

I did a 1 month trial with Hulu for tv & movies streamed through my Blu Ray player.  There were a few things I didn't like about Hulu.   Some of the shows had commericals.  I also didn't like I had to scroll through the "adult" shows to get find my kids shows.  When I did the trial, there was more PBS shows & had more current shows on it.

I then did a 1 month trial with Netflix & fell in love.  I'm totally hooked.  I definitely get my $8 a month out of it.  It's soooooo much cheaper than cable.  No matter what time of the day, there's always something for me & my kids to watch.

Since I haven't had cable for so long, all of these shows are new to me.  No commericals.   Every week I'm finding new shows. This week I found a bunch of 80's shows.  I've had fun watching Knight Rider, MacGyver, Coach, Cheers, Family Ties etc.  There are tons of show from Discovery channel.  I've watched all of the Clean House, Say Yes to the Dress, & My Fair Wedding shows.  There are unlimited shows for the kids to watch too.

You can also stream through your Wii.  I have the app on my phone & can watch while I'm out of the house too.

I highly recommend Netflix if you are looking to save some money.

Register Your Subway Card

Register your Subway cards to know the balance and combine the balances from your cards.  I accidentally threw my card away with a balance & kept the one with no balance.  It wasn't a problem because I had registered my cards & could just transfer the money from the card I threw away to a new card.

Coke Rewards

In addition to Pampers and Disney Rewards, I also like Coke Rewards.  I don't drink Coke products but often there are free codes on line.  I recently signed up for Dunkin' Donuts & Southwest e-mails to get codes.  I have gotten a few free things.  Right now I have enough for a frree 8x8 Shutterfly book, but I'm waiting until I have enough for a free 8x11 book.

Codes are located under the lid or inside multi packages.

Check it out!

Restaurant.com Discount Certificates

Use code ENJOY to get a $10 certificate to restaurant.com for $1.60

This is a good place to check for deals when you are traveling.

The Grande Ranch - on old 30 has certificates available.  There's a $10 one for $1.60 where you have to spend at least $15 & a $15 one for $2.40 where you have to spend at least $22.50.  Tuesday nights they run a great deal on pizza.  Don't know if you can combine the deals.

The Pines is also on there. a $15 one for $2.40 where you have to spend at least $22.50

If you have used them in the past, they will let you exchange old ones for new ones.

Way to use up all of your tube of cosmetics

I learned this cool trick at church to get the last of your cosmetics/lotions out of the tube.  Cut off the top of the tube.  Then you can reach into the product.  Slide the top back over the bottom to keep it from drying out.

Make Your Own Foaming Soap Dispensers

I love my foaming soap dispensers.  I have 5 for hand soap, 1 for kids soap, 1 for kids shampoo, & 1 for dish soap.  I use old foaming soap dispensers, fill about 1 inch with soap, & slowly fill the rest with water.  I turn upside down & back slowly to mix it.  Don't shake it or it will get too foamy.  Saves money in the amount of soap you use.  I really like the dish soap one.  It makes cleaning just a dish or 2 very easy.

Cell Phone Safety

We (like lots of people) have canceled our landline & only use cell phones.  I taught my boys this week how to make a phone call on my cell phone just in case something would happen.  It's not as simple as picking up a land line phone & calling.

We talked about calling 911, reviewed our address, & also how to call my husband & grandparents.  I hope they never have to use it, but now they know.

Just a safety tip for you.

Expiring Coupons

If you are like me, you have a lot of coupons expiring this week.  It would be a good time to go through them & see if there are any you want to use this week before they expire.

Check out this post on sending expired coupons to the military.

Make Your Own Hand Scrub

I saw a cheap way to make your own Hand Scrub on Pinterest.  I made some for Mother's Day & liked it some much I made some for myself.  You fill a container about 2/3 fill with sugar.  Fill the rest with Dawn Hand Renewal with Olay.  Stir & add sugar or Dawn until you get the desired consistency.  It's like Mary Kay Satin Hands set.  You just need a little bit to wash your hands & they will be super soft.

If you are on Pinterest, check out my DIY board for other ideas.  http://pinterest.com/jcmiller128/diy-tricks/

Make your own Wax Tarts

I get frustrated when I burn candles & all the wax doesn't burn.  I found two ways to deal with this & to continue enjoying them.

I have a hot plate that I used at work to keep my tea hot that I can put the jar on to melt the wax.  If there's a lot of wax I keep doing this to release the smell.

The other thing I've found is to use an empty plastic tart holder & refill it with the melted wax.  Then I can break off whatever I want & put it in my tart warmer.

Favorite Authors

This really doesn't have much to do with frugal living except to say I love my library.  I love that I can reserve most any book or movie I want & if I can be patient, I can enjoy it for free.

Some of my favorite authors:

  • Kaye Dacus
  • Sandra Bricker
  • Lori Wick
  • Robin Jones Gunn
  • Dee Henderson
  • Mindy Starns Clark
  • Janice A Thompson
  • Sharon Gillenwater
  • Lorena McCourtney
  • Joanne Fluke
  • Becky Wade
  • Nicholas Sparks
  • John Grisham
Every couple months I go on the library website & look for new books by these authors or if I see something in the CBD catalog I like, I just go the library website to request it.  We do the same thing with the book orders that come home from school.
